Dalek Ascension Tradition Tree

Almost since the inception of the Whoniverse Galaxy Mod, I have been challenged by how the Ascension mechanics of Stellaris interact with the Daleks. With choices between Genetic, Cybernetic, and Psionic ascension, the Daleks have elements of all three, yet each presents significant thematic issues:

  • While Daleks have some (mostly latent) psionic abilities, I can hardly see them communicating with the Shroud, except possibly trying to invade it.

  • Cybernetics seem fitting, but all Daleks are already cyborgs. It feels as if they already achieved this ascension long time ago.

  • Genetics aligns most closely with their ideology, yet existing non-cybernetic traits fail to fully reflect their true development.

The solution is clear: Daleks require a unique Tradition Tree that truly represents their ambitions, technologies, and societal progress. With patch 0.8, I am proud to introduce the first incarnation of the Dalek Ascension Tradition Tree, unlocked by the Dalek Ascension perk:

This new tree is thematically closest to the Genetics tradition but with its own unique twists:

  • The Daleks have a special Dalek Supremacy council agenda available. This agenda increases the empire's Unity by +5 % (+20 % after finishing), Pop Assembly Speed by +2.5 % (+10 % after finishing) and Influence generated by Rivalries by 20 % (50 % after finishing).

  • Finishing the Tradition Tree adds new species modification points and trait picks, decreases the cost of Modify Species special project and, most of all, unlocks unique species traits - the Dalek Variants. More on these later.

The traditions themselves are divided into two branches: one focused on Dalek advancements in genetics, the other on their technological progress. Here’s a closer look at each:

Here are some development notes for these:

  • Human-Dalek Conversion: Inspired by Daleks in Manhattan / Evolution of the Daleks, this enhances Dalek Incubation Vats and unlocks a new purge type, converting a portion of purged Humans into Daleks—perfect for immersive roleplay.

  • Progenitor Device: Referencing Victory of the Daleks, this is the most genetics-focused tradition. It increases Habitability, adds species trait picks, and even allows the removal of positive traits—crucial for a Genetics-based playthrough.

  • Nanocloud Virus: Inspired by Asylum of the Daleks, this enhances Dalek Incubation Vats by adding a Necromancer job, which incidentally spawns defensive undead armies on the planet.

  • Emergency Temporal Shift: Based on the Cult of Skaro’s teleportation technology, this increases ship combat disengagement chances and unlocks Jump Drive research.

  • Pathweb: Drawing from the hive mind concept in Asylum of the Daleks and beyond, this acts as the "psionic" perk, boosting Intel, Codebreaking, and Encryption.

Now, let's take a look at the Dalek Variants - the unique species traits unlocked after you finish the whole tradition tree:

There are five Variants in total, each costing 2 species trait points, with most of them being mutually exclusive. These Variants represent different Dalek subtypes seen throughout the series, allowing players to tailor their Dalek species to match their preferred playstyle. Need a planet dedicated to research? Evolve its inhabitants into Psyche Variant Daleks! Struggling with colonization on a low-habitability world? Spider Variant Daleks will thrive in such conditions!

This is just the first iteration of the Dalek Ascension Tradition Tree, and while I intend to keep its core concept intact, some bonuses may be adjusted for balance. If you have any thoughts on potential tweaks or improvements, feel free to share your feedback!

With the Dalek Ascension Tradition Tree taking shape, one question naturally arises—what about the Cybermen? Their path to perfection is quite different, yet just as compelling. Perhaps their Traditions could represent their ever-growing ability to cyber-convert other species—starting with humans, then moving on to Silurians, and eventually reaching the point where nearly all organics can be assimilated.

I have a few ideas brewing, but I’d love to hear your thoughts. What do you think would make the perfect Cybermen Ascension path? Let me know!
